Needle Palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix)

Needle Palm

Rhapidophyllum hystrix

Able to take temperatures well below zero Fahrenheit, the Needle Palm is perhaps the cold hardiest palm in the world! Native to the southeastern United States, Rhapidophyllum hystrix is one of the toughest and most tolerable accent style palms available on the market, but it is not just its hardiness that makes it so popular - it has good looks to match! This lively, slow growing shrubby palm features lustrous, deep green leaves atop a wide, textured trunk that offers a lush display of year round greenery.

Needle Palms thrive in both sun and shade, so it is a great choice for both indoor and outdoor use. Breathe better and live better! It is a slow growing, small sized palm and when used as an indoor houseplant, it can detoxify the air and restore freshness inside the home!

As great as the Needle Palm is as a potted houseplant, it is just as awesome outdoors! It is a naturally pest and disease free plant that is super easy to care for. It requires low to moderate water use and loves to be planted in full sun. It tolerates high heat and is very cold resistant, so it is an ideal palm no matter where you live in the Southwest! We love to plant them to create private areas on a property, where their clumping style growth makes them an excellent choice for use as a tropical hedge and barrier. Once planted in your landscape, you can pretty much leave it alone and let it do its thing – adding lots of character and beauty into any landscape.

This American native is hard to find fully grown. Here’s the good news. At Palm Paradise, we custom grow Needle Palms from the finest seeds in our local climate right here in Bonsall! We are able to offer these durable, good-looking palms in sizes ranging from small to big!
