King Kong Fishtail Palm (Caryota gigas)

King Kong Fishtail Palm

Caryota gigas

The King Kong Fishtail Palm, don’t let its name fool you, as this “monster” is prized more for its classic beauty and tropical shade! Native to Thailand, Caryota gigas is a single trunk species and one of the best canopy palms of all! They have the large dark green fronds and fishtail-shaped leaves its cousins are noted for and is fast becoming a familiar sight throughout the Southern California region. We like to plant these as an alternative to clumping bamboo and use them to create the lushest, tropical hedge we can find!

King Kong Fishtail Palms are cold hardy and able to thrive in full sun to partial shade. Once established, they will have low to moderate water requirements, and though it has a slower growth rate, the beauty of its leaves and the amount of shade they can provide makes it well worth the wait.

We love to plant Caryota gigas in larger backyards and front yards, where they look especially stunning when their fishtail-shaped leaves are lit up with landscape lighting, creating a dramatic effect that is bound to make your landscape the envy of your neighborhood. As stated earlier, this clustering palm grows dense and full, so it is one of the best palms to have if you are looking for the tropical privacy look. Of course, you really can’t beat the shade it provides either - we love to plant them to create a private retreat in the comfort of your own backyard.

Thanks to Palm Paradise and our huge selection of exotic and rare palms, you can have that feeling right here at home in the Southwest!
