And while Aloe barbadensis may be prized for its medicinal benefits, its use as an attractive plant for landscaping is just as popular. Aloe barbadensis is a common fixture here in Southern California, where you might see them in pretty much every neighborhood. Their popularity makes us forget that they are not native, they are mostly from South Africa. Aloe Vera has a distinctive colorful tint and tubular summertime bloom which attracts hummingbirds that just can’t get enough of the yellow flowers. We love them too, and plant them for use on all landscapes in the Southwest – from the desert to the sea.

Aloe Vera is very drought tolerant and super easy to care for. In fact, it may love you even more if you tend to leave it alone and let it grow in full sun. We love to plant them in rows, where they really bring out the colorful effect, and since water is stored in its leaves, it can act as a natural fire retardant, too! Plus, the leaves clump out of the center to form a wide reaching, yet short cluster, so they are very easy to manage, in other words, they are perfect for just about any place on your landscape that could benefit from its natural array of colors!
